Coming summer 2015, Kentucky State University is hosting an exciting new program for rising junior and senior high school students.

The Summer Apprenticeship Program is designed to prepare students for college life while exposing them to different career opportunities in STEM—science, technology, engineering and mathematics—fields.

This scholarship-based, three-week residential experience will be held June 7-27, 2015 on the KSU campus. Students will attend college preparatory courses in addition to receiving instruction for developmental classes in the areas of math, chemistry, and physics.

Program participants will have many opportunities for experimental research experiences through short projects on the environment; agriculture; biology; cyberinfrastructure; computer science and information technology; geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing applications; and aquaculture, as well as learn to use water quality, air pollution, and soil and microclimate monitoring instruments.

In addition to projects with KSU STEM faculty, students will participate in lectures with professional scientists and guest speakers from government and corporate agencies and get the chance to visit workplaces in Frankfort, Lexington and Louisville.

The participants who successfully attend this program and intend to join KSU's STEM undergraduate degree programs will be provided with partial three-year stipends.
This program is supported by National Science Foundation Historically Black College and Universities-Undergraduate Program (NSF-HBCU-UP) and the United States Department of Agriculture-Capacity Building Grant (USDA-CBG).
