Neighborhoods across the country are filled with empty lots, old buildings in despair, and tenants who cannot find an apartment or commercial space that works for them. There are people who walk around their neighborhood and imagine a million ideas to improve it. They see potential for infill, renovations, or starting a business. These small scale improvements work best when they come from small scale developers. The Small Developer Training Workshop is designed to help regular people build something they can be proud of, close to home. The weekend workshop will provide technical skills and resources for small projects like 1-3 story buildings with less than 20 units, which are commercial or mixed in use. The course assumes you know a lot about where you live, but not necessarily much about real estate and development. Through applied learning, guidance from seasoned coaches and networking with local like-minded people, this workshop is a first step toward leaving a physical legacy in your neighborhood.

This weekend workshop will provide technical skills and resources to navigate development financing, zoning and entitlement, site selection, building design and basic approaches to construction in order to assemble your own small scale real estate deal. The workshop will also address practical issues surrounding becoming a developer, including making a transition from your day job, risk management, quality of life and basic business setup and contracting methods.
